The Celebrate Canada 150 Bike Ride is a self-supported and self-funded 5000km six province bike ride to celebrate the people and beauty of Canada.
The main riders are Ritchie and Caroline Hughes of Victoria BC. The family support team are sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Roger Craig of Brantford, ON.
Ritchie is a former Canadian Armed Forces member who has volunteered, supported and previously raised funds for cycling events including, Boomer’s Legacy, Soldier On and Wounded Warriors. He has personally seen how these programs can save the lives of those suffering from PTSD. “My motivation in getting help for people suffering from PTSD is a personal one. I believe that, if left untreated PTSD can have multigenerational negative impacts on families. I wonder if this was the case in my own family with two grandfather veterans of the WW1 who were both severely wounded. In those days, programs like the ones offered by Soldier On and Honour House did not exist. We are all lucky today that they do. The tricky part may be in getting our suffering heroes to take the first step and seek help”.
Training for the ride is well underway and the ride itself will begin on May 18th in Victoria, BC and arrive in Ottawa, ON on July 1st for Canada’s 150th Birthday.
Our team is small, however we will be dependant on hundreds of Canadians to make this a huge success!
This ride will honour Real Canadian Heroes from our Armed Forces, Police, Fire and other First Responders and their families living with the effects of PTSD.
We are raising funds and awareness for Honour House Society. We first became aware of Honour House in a news article on a Ranch in Kamloops that they will be opening later this year that will focus on PTSD. We particularly like the inclusiveness of the people that Honour House serves—to many everyday heroes who wear various uniforms across Canada. It is kind of like a Ronald McDonald House for people in uniform. It is very special that we show our support for their dedication and protection they offer to all Canadians.
We invite you to follow along with our journey!
